OWL LOVE

I have developed a love for owls over the years. Of all the cards I make, my favourite ones usually have an owl on them.  It's also interesting to note that these cards tend to be among Flaunts best sellers. So I guess I am not the only one who is giving a hoot about owls these days! Are owls trending because of their quiet insightfulness, their fabled wiseness or the fact that they are shrouded in mystery and superstition?  Whooo Knows?

At the end of the day (when our owl friends start to play) owl - themed accessories have been popping up in many home decor stores. Some stationers, jewelers and artists are also currently inspired by owls.

VALENTINE'S DAY GREETINGS

Vintage Valentine - 1909

There is a lovely history behind Valentine's Day beyond what poopy-pant anti-Valentine people say (and you know who you are:).  It's not just a "manufactured" holiday, but rather an annual ritual that began in the middle ages and really got it's legs in the Victorian Era - that's when those gorgeous and elaborate (and confining) dresses had their heyday.
Valentine's day was named after St. Valentine (270 A.D.) - the Catholic patron saint of love.  He was a Roman priest who was locked up for defiance and legend says that he wrote a farewell note to his lady in waiting and signed it "from your valentine."
And there you have it - the start of a "holiday" that would forever be marked on our calendars.
With the busy lives that we all lead it would be nice to take the time to send a dear friend, a grandmother, a spouse or a child a little Valentine to let them know that you are thinking of them.

Here are some vintage reproductions circa 1950, which my girls will be giving out to their classmates (so, so cute!):
